Australian pagan singer Wendy Rule [pictured] has publicly dumped New Orleans-based self-styled “warlock” Christian Day's Hexfest after he made a repellent crack about starving Palestinians.
Despite watching Day hurl online abuse across the Pagan community like a drunken bard, Rule had initially agreed to perform at his Hexfest event next August. Her usual stance is to remain neutral, moving between Pagan factions without kicking off.
But that plan went up in smoke this week whena revolting Watchers of the Dawn quote from Day about the plight of those in Gaza surfaced on the WitchesWorkshop page. For those who missed it:
“They can always dine on one another. I'm surprised they haven't eaten the hostages yet.”
Given the chance to deny or explain the remark, Day instead clammed up.
Rule then sent him a polite email withdrawing from the festival. No contract had been signed and no cash had changed hands. She didn’t explain her decision, having seen Day’s flair for melodrama and wanting to avoid a circus.
That didn't stop the tantrum. Day phoned her up and, according to Rule, “was literally screaming down the phone” before shouting: “Go fuck yourself you fucking cunt” and hanging up. He then carried on ranting on Facebook Messenger. Rule replied: “Your response tells me I made the right decision.”
Still not done, Day fired off two emails the next day. One was labelled “apologies”. Rule said it started with: “Sorry for calling you a cunt” before launching into a torrent of “but you should have…” waffle. She stopped reading after two lines.
The cherry on top came when Day posted on Facebook, without naming her, about “a certain warbler” and boasted about deleting “57 of her songs from the Hexfest playlist”.
Rule closed the door firmly, stating:
“I object to Christian Day’s statements about Palestine... I had made no public statement against Christian Day before his abusive phone call. I am not performing at Hexfest, nor at his online festival, Witchcon, next year.”
She added that she has no professional or personal connection with Day, and this would be her final word on the subject.
There’s not enough sage in the world to smudge away this mess.
